Roughly about a week ago me and the missus were in Datong area as I was looking around for the labour office. I just wanted to get to the labour office quickly and get it over and done with, but the missus being proper Taiwanese pestered me, and pestered me and pestered me. A word of wisdom for you all, if you have a Taiwanese other half and they tell you they're hungry make sure they eat or they will make your life a living hell until they do.
So she waps out her phone to check online where people like to eat in this area, and up popped this interesting place. I get it, it might not be everyones cup of tea but I was intrigued to check it out, and so was the missus. It is a famous place, where you can buy all different kinds of animal organs and parts. The missus told me this stuff will be a lot more common in the south than the north, I just have to smile, nod and agree because I am sure she knows.
We get there and it's your typical style Taiwanese small place, food stand outside with seating in the back. The food stand has all the different organs at the front that you can choose from and looks pretty disgusting with them just there. It still didn't put me off mind as I was looking forward to trying them.
We ordered some kind of noodles made from rice, pigs snout, intestine and pigs skin. I was very curious to see how it was going to look once they had put it onto the plate, considering how it looked in the little container. When they brought it out, most of it looked fine. Although your mind still knew what it was. You just block it out and eat, and see what it tastes like as you would with any other kind of food.
First I wanted to try the pigs skin, because I love chicken's skin and for some odd reason I just assumed well I like chikens skin, so surely I should like pig's skin. Big, big mistake! The pigs skin wasn't very good at all. I really didn't like it, it had a weird texture. Somehow it was kind of chewy and a bit bland. There wasn't much flavour to it, just chewy, bland and very odd.
The pigs snout was next. And boy oh boy the pigs snout tasted good. It's technically his nose. I was eating pig nose and boy it was good. I would even eat the pigs nose again. I thought some of the snout meat still looked a little bit like the nose which was a little off putting but not by much because I liked it, so ate the lot.
Next I ate the intestines. I have no problem with eating intestines, I have ate them a lot around Asia and I like them. The thought is a bit rank but the taste however is delicious. I would eat the intestines again for sure.
The Noodles were not that good at all, even my missus didn't like them too much and she likes these kind of noodles. So that confirmed they really were bad and its not just my hate of all forms of rice noodles putting me off them. (Update the missus said they were weird because they're normally used for savoury but she prefers to eat this kind on shaved ice).
If you are looking to try something a bit different and special, don't be put off by what this shop sells. It really is a true cultural experience of trying something else. Live life on the edge, eat a pigs nose!
