So my Mrs birthday was coming up and I had no clue where to take her. If my last experiences are anything to go by it's no wonder the Mrs has now took things into her own hands and looked for a place to book for the day herself.
The only decent place I managed to find when researching was a little Swedish restaurant called Flavors. Other than that I have picked some proper stinkers. They have been shocking even though I did a load of reading online about where to go and thought this is it, I have it nailed!
One year I found a French place called La Idiot. I should of known from the name to give it a wide bloody berth but it looked intersting and had some brilliant reviews. Needless to say I called up and got it all booked. I was sure it was going to be good, but it turned out to be a massive heap of shit. Was a right gutter! And we also left the restaurant still hungry, I felt like I had literally ate one lettuce leaf. We even ended up going to Mcdonalds after it because we were both still starving. AVOID LA IDIOT! Avoid the heap of shit! IT IS UTTER CRAP!
The next terrible place I booked for her birthday which had excellent reviews was some Greek place. It was atrocious. The service was shambolic, they offered hardly any food, it was cold and in general just bad, very bloody bad. They even messed up our seats when we arrived. I wanted to punch them in the face as two years on the trot I picked some utter shocking places to eat. Those two places were either writing their own reviews or paying people like my blogger mates to sell their soul and tell the world they are the tits, when really they are the shits!
So from now on, it's probably for the best the Mrs looks for somewhere as my past record as you can say is a pile of stinking turd crawling its way down a shitter near you.
Onwards to the Grand Mayful. She called me up one day after work and asked...would I like to go to a fancy hotel buffet for her birthday, it's pricey but suppoesd to be great and have excellent beef and other meat options were available too, as the people who own it are butchers, or also own a butcher company or something like this. Either way they have access to good meat which is rather helpful when you want to run a restaurant. Great meat you say, the carnivore in me was excited by that...yes yes yes I know it's her birthday but I can get excited about where we are going too.
We had to make sure we both woke up to get there on time, for some reason the address claims it's in Zhongshan online, but really its Neihu and they make you pay the cash upfront when you make the booking so if your late you miss out on that precious eating time which is so valuable to people here, and now that i've been here for a wee little while I too love that valuable eating time and would hate to miss any of it.
We managed to get there on time anyway, and it was pretty fancy inside as to be expected from any decent hotel. There were a few people milling around but it turns out we managed to get a decent seat because the Mrs told them when booking it, it's for her birthday result!
Once inside I did notice how fancy all the food looked. They claim on their website to use only the best ingredients and it looked that way from looking around. When they sat us down they informed us we got to order a main dish each as well as chomping everything on offer at the buffet.
I orignally ordered duck, and the Mrs ordered the shrimp and beef. I decided to try something else and ordered the lobster with cheese combination. I don't recall eating lobster before, it's not something high on the list of dinners your mother puts out while your growing up in Costa Del Toon. Anyway the lobster was rank, pretty awful and it was impossible to even find some lobster meat. I did manage to eat a tiny bit of claw or whatever and it wasn't good, even the Mrs said it wasn't great and she clearly knows a lot better than me when it comes to seafood. They may as well have sent out a lobster shell with cheese inside.
The beef on the other hand was very good. A lot better than other places I have ate beef in Taiwan. It was a shame the portion was so small, but it was a buffet so you could just go back for more and more obviously.
The buffet was excellent I thought. They had all different kinds of food, loads of great seafood which I avoided like the plague, but the Mrs devoured quite a bit of it, I did promise her I was going to try and eat more seafood when I came back to Taiwan. Unfortunately for her the lobster was a disaster and I give up pretty quickly so I could connquer every meat dish available to me.
I enjoyed their Thai food in particular. I thought they made it excellently. The women dishing out the Thai food didn't look pleased when I dropped a big dollop of green curry all over the desktop mind, and I told, "Luv sorry I dropped a bit." A bit being a massive puddle of green gooo. Enough green goo to put others off from standing next to me which was fine by me. Make sure you try their Thai food if you eat there, I believe personally it was one of the better types of food they had on offer.
They had a few different types of western food to choose from. Pizza and past among other things. I tried most of it, and they did it well although I preferred to eat the food that wasn't western food so I didn't eat much from these dishes. Just a tiny bit to try and confirm it was good.
They had a bloke making up fresh sushi all day long. The sushi looked great but I didn't get round to trying any unfortunately before my massive gut decided enough was enough and it wouldn't allow me to eat anymore food for fear of busting and popping open right there in front of everyone.
They had Loads of desserts which due to the proximity to Halloween were made to look a lot like ghosts, monsters, spiders, fingers and other creepy things. Considering my sweet tooth infliction I was looking forward to trying a lot of them. Not only did they have all the Halloween cakes and biscuits they also had other things like fresh desserts, macarons, cheese and bread and fruit. All the cakes and chocolate I tried was excellent and I believe I ate just a little too many.
You could also order your own fresh juice, just had to ask what they had and tell them to make it up and they did. They wapped out the fruits and veg, threw it in the blender and just knocked it up on the spot to order. This was a nice little added touch. There was also all kinds of different salads that you could make up yourself by adding what you wanted to.
I enjoyed it a lot, although I ate so much to the point where I felt like I was going to burst. In fact I was quite sad because I didn't eat as much as I wanted or as much as I used to be able to. This got me thinking was it all worth it? The price is expensive and the products they use do seem to match their patter about being excellent but if you can't eat like a horse is a buffet worth it?
I think it was because you got to eat all different kinds of food in one sitting but unless you can wolf down around 6 plates plus x amount of desserts and other stuff it does seem to be excessively priced for 3-4 plates of grub. After all that was it worth it. I loved it, so if I loved it and had a nice day then it was worth it. I guess everyone just has to decide their self if they think its worth it for them or not.
Either way, it was the Mrs birthday so its good to go all out and do something a bit fancier than usual. God knows where we will eat next year, but I do know one thing...I MUST NOT DECIDE ON THE RESTAURANT!
