This restaurant happens to be close to my office and I pass it every day. Considering the shape of me, it's obvious I love a good burger. Seeing as I am right next to it, it would have been rude not to try it.
When I first started at the job i'm in now I tried eating here with a friend and I wasn't too impressed with it. I remember it being rather bland and boring, and the burger meat didn't taste that great.
Considering the last time I went it was a bit iffy I was dubious about going back for my lunch, but I did want to find out why it seems to be busy at lunch times during the week. Often the place has loads of tables booked for lunch hours. I wanted to know is it because it is good, or is it just because of the location and having no other burger places near by?
So off I waddled to find out. At the entrance when I was seeing if I could go inside, I noticed they had some kind of special Laymens burger that was around 600NT. It was huge, and should of been called the heart attack because it looked like a heart attack in a bun. I did contemplate getting it but that wouldn't of done the world of good for my sexy rotound figure that I am trying to lose. I know, nor does buying a burger but once in a while doesn't hurt. The Heart Attack would take a month to work off I reckon.
Anyway once inside, again during lunch time the place was packed. This was again a little odd as I still remember the first time I went there with a mate and it wasn't anything special. Anyway I scanned the lunch time special menu and didn't want anything from there.
This time I went for their so called standard American burger, with bacon and cheese. If this was unsatisfactory when it seemed like this was their main staple of burger in the whole place then I would of known I was right and the place was a stinking heap of shit. I sat there waiting in anticipation, if it was as shit as last time I wouldn't of been pleased in the slightest.
I ordered the set, so I could get a salad, soup and a drink. This got me thinking, due to attempting and not really succeeding on losing a lot of weight yet, these people who rock up to mcdonalds or burger places and eat burgers and a salad. What are they playing at? Do they do this because they feel guilty and this is there way of showing people look im eating a salad too, please don't judge me for squeezing this fat juicy chunk of burger in my gob like that...LOOOOOOOOK YOU BASTARDS I DID EAT A SALAD FIRST!
Anyway the salad was OK, I wasn't too keen on the sauce. I mean what much can go wrong with a salad. You use fresh veg, and then add a sauce and its fine all the time. Unless the sauce is manky. So the salad was good.
The onion soup was good. I love onions though so I could be a bit biased. I am glad it came with onion soup and not clams or little seafood things like a lot of places in Taipei. I really enjoyed the onion soup. It seemed like they tried to make it thick like a western style, but not too thick so people in Taipei would still eat it. I don't know if this was just by accident or intended but I liked the outcome.
Onto the grand finale, the piece de resistance. The burger. I am gonna say this out loud, I now look forward to eating my junk or crap food because I try to eat less, so I do indeed hope that it tastes bloody good or I have to wait a while again before I can have more. So as I bit into that burger, the thoughts running through my little hamster sized mind were; this better be good, this better taste good, etc etc you get the point.
On the first bite I realised this burger was a whole lot better than the last crappy one I got. In fact this standard burger I really enjoyed. Now it was not the greatest burger I have ever had, and it wasn't the worst either. It was juicy, and enjoyable. It made me want to apologise to them for thinking they are shit, but that would indeed look a little odd wouldn't it. Standing at the door saying...Uncle Laymens burger I am sorry I thought you were a stinking heap of massive horse shit, but actually you are indeed all right so accept my apology you bastard.
I would go back again, but if I did I wouldn't order the spicy burger I did last time. I will for sure be sticking to the classic, cheese, bacon, big chunk of meat and bread because it was great. Also if your a burger shop and you manage to mess up a standard classic burger you may as well close.
So in conclusion stick with the classic here, because they do it very, very well.
